In this day and age it seems as if everyone in the world is busy taking pictures, of everyone, of themselves.

Well, why not, it’s so easy to do, just hold your phone and click.

But the pictures we are taking today do not compare with the ones that were taken down through the ages. Poets, writers, and artists of various types have conveyed pictures that will last  forever, it would seem. Pictures have the ability to make us feel happy, excited, disgusted and curious, among many things.

Henry W. Baker was an English hymn writer, born in 1821. In 1852 he wrote his earliest hymn. He rendered the church great service by editing “Hymns Ancient and Modern”, the most popular of modern hymn books. One of his most famous hymns, “Angels, we have heard on high…” we sing every Christmas season.

One Sunday morning our visiting minister, Reverend Cook, gave a sermon on the most beautiful of all the Psalms, “The Lord is my Shepherd.” Immediately a picture came to my mind of the song written by Henry Baker, “The King of Love My Shepherd Is.”

“The King of love my shepherd is,

Whose goodness faileth never.

I nothing lack if I am His, and He is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow,

My ransom soul He leadeth,

And where the verdant pastures grow,

With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish, oft I strayed

But yet in love He sought me

And on His shoulder gently laid,

And, home, rejoicing, brought me”

What a beautiful picture that hymn brings to mind, as does the original Psalm.

A picture we can keep in our hearts forever, just as we keep the pictures of family, friends, marvelous scenic views and towering buildings soaring up into the heavens on our walls and in albums or on our phones, thanks to modern technology!

Thought for the day: Find something you would die for, and live for it.    Unknown
