KNOXVILLE – Motorists traveling on Gap Creek Road in Carter County should be aware of upcoming road construction activities that will have a significant impact on traffic.
Beginning on Monday, January 5, 2026, the Gap Creek Road Bridge over Gap Creek will be closed as a new bridge replacement project gets underway. This bridge is located between Big Springs Road and John Taylor Road in Elizabethton. This project will replace the existing two-span concrete slab bridge, built in 1948, with a reinforced concrete box culvert, improving safety and mobility for motorists in Carter County.
The Gap Creek Road Bridge was previously closed based on inspection findings and engineering recommendations. During Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, TDOT reevaluated the structure and implemented a temporary one-lane serpentine traffic pattern to allow limited reopening.
This non-standard configuration was designed to distribute vehicle loads across specific areas of the bridge until construction could begin.
Motorists can use State Route 362 (Mary Patton Highway) as a detour route. Signage will be in place to direct motorists around the work zone. This closure is expected to be in place until Summer 2026.
TDOT will provide updates throughout bridge construction via its website and social media channels. For more information, please visit www.tn.gov/tdot or on Twitter/X at @MarkNagiTDOT.
This schedule is contingent on favorable weather conditions. Motorists are advised to use extreme caution in this area as workers will be present.
