A Celebration of Life for the late Knoxville Mayor Randy Tyree will be held on Saturday, January 17, at the Sunsphere. The event will honor the two-term mayor, who is credited with promoting the 1982 Knoxville World’s Fair.

Tyree passed away peacefully on November 24 at the age of 85.

The event will start at 10 a.m. and be live-streamed on the Sunsphere’s Facebook page. The celebration is open to the public, and the expected overflow crowd will be accommodated as needed. Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon will read a proclamation, his family and friends will speak briefly, and the police department’s mounted patrol will appear.

Visit Knoxville is asking anyone who wants to attend to contact them via visitknoxville.com/sunsphere to RSVP. Following the ceremony, the Sunsphere’s Observation Deck will be open to the public.

Tyree’s career also included serving as a city police officer and police commissioner, and his campaigns for governor and sheriff.
