~ from Knox Makers + Trees Knoxville
Local nonprofit organizations Knox Makers & Trees Knoxville are partnering to host a free event on Friday, October 23rd from 5 – 6 PM. The fun evening festivities will include tree planting, tree adoption, costume contest, food, beverages, and more. Volunteers wishing to help grow the local tree canopy can register to attend at https://treesknoxville.org/event/tree-planting-with-knox-makers. Space is limited, so sign-up is required.
The tree planting event is part of a series of community events hosted by Trees Knoxville as part of their 2nd annual “Tree Week” taking place October 17th-25th.
Trees Knoxville selects the locations of their annual tree plantings based on the results of their annual tree planting survey, which allows locals to suggest future planting locations. Trees are planted in street right-of-ways, parks, bus stops, schools, cemeteries, churches, and other public spaces across the city, with a focus on areas experiencing high urban heat and limited tree canopy. Expanding the local tree canopy helps provide shade, improve public health, and create habitat for the broader natural ecosystem.
Knox Makers is Knoxville’s largest and longest-running community makerspace. For a low monthly cost, members gain 24/7 access to the 10,500sq ft workshop full of professional-grade equipment in specialized work zones including 3D printing, blacksmithing, laser cutting, metalworking, and woodworking. The organization is 100% volunteer-run with 400+ members, and hosts 200+ classes annually open to both members and the general public. Their 6th annual Maker Market on October 4th featured more than 50 local vendors with close to 1,000 attendees. As part of the organization’s long-standing commitment to enriching the local community, they regularly participate in prominent major city events such as Vestival, Dogwood Arts Festival, Marble Springs Statehood Day, and the Arts & Culture Alliance’s “Arts in the Airport” exhibits.
Come spend the evening outside with neighbors, getting your hands in the soil and planting trees that will provide shade, beauty, and cleaner air for years to come. Please dress for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes, and be ready to dig in. Trees Knoxville will provide tools, gloves, and planting guidance on-site. Knox Makers is located at 116 Childress St. SW Knoxville, TN 37920, just off of Chapman Highway. Event to be held rain or shine.
