Sheriff Tom Spangler Endorses David Amburn for Knox County Sheriff

In a significant move for Knox County’s law enforcement community, Sheriff Tom Spangler has officially endorsed David Amburn for the position of Knox County Sheriff. Sheriff Spangler, who is term-limited after two successful elections, first took office in 2018, winning with 65% of the vote, and followed up with an impressive 71% in 2022 for his final term and will likely retire as one of the most popular and respected sheriffs in Knox County history.
Sheriff Spangler’s endorsement reflects his confidence in Amburn’s ability to lead and enhance safety within Knox County. During his tenure, Spangler prioritized community engagement and the development of a strong law enforcement team focused on addressing critical local issues.
David Amburn, who has demonstrated unwavering dedication over his 34 consecutive years of committed service, was promoted to Chief of Detectives in 2021. In this role, he expertly oversees numerous units, including: Major Crimes, Narcotics, Family Crimes, Juvenile Crimes, Gang Unit, Organized Retail Crime Unit, Cold Cases, Property Crimes and Fire Investigation Unit.
Additionally, Amburn serves as Chief of Fleet Services, the Bomb Squad and all Emergency Operations Liaisons. In 2025, he collaborated with Sheriff Spangler, the late Chief Deputy Bernie Lyon and other key members of the agency to form an Elder Abuse Crimes Unit, further showcasing his dedication to protecting the community’s most vulnerable populations.
Sheriff Spangler confidently stated, “David’s extensive experience, commitment to public safety, and leadership qualities make him the ideal candidate to lead Knox County as our next sheriff. I wholeheartedly endorse him and encourage the community to support his candidacy.”
