IT’S TIME TO RECOGNIZE UNSUNG HEROES

They give their all for the team

By Steve Williams

He’s a non-starter who plays and contributes to the team like a starter. He’s a player who gives his all and doesn’t mind to be a substitute and he’s talented enough to play multiple positions.

When he’s not in the game, he vocally supports his teammates and is ready to go in when you call upon him. He has never been a Player of the Week or recognized on TV or in the newspaper. Yet, he’s one of the first to show up at practice and one of the last to leave after practice or a game. And in victory or defeat, he displays good sportsmanship.

BECKETT RICH

Christian Academy

“Beckett Rich is exactly the kind of player every successful team needs,” said CAK Head Coach Chad Speck. “While he does not start on defense, he plays a valuable rotational role in our secondary and is a starter on special teams. He embraces every opportunity to contribute, practices with tremendous effort, and is an outstanding competitor. He is always ready when his number is called and consistently puts the success of the team ahead of individual recognition.

“Last week, in our upset victory over rival Grace, Beckett blocked an extra point that proved pivotal in the outcome of the game. It was a tremendous play and a great example of a young man making the most of his opportunity. Beckett brings energy, toughness, and a team-first attitude to our program every day. He may not receive the headlines, but his contributions are significant, and he has earned the respect of his coaches and teammates. He is incredibly deserving of this recognition.”

KYDEN PARKER

South-Doyle

The Unsung Hero for South-Doyle is junior offensive and defensive lineman Kyden Parker, said Coach Gibson.

“He is a back up on both sides of the ball for us and is always one of the first players in the door. Kyden consistently displays high sportsmanship and always cheers on his teammates from the sideline when he isn’t in on the action.”

LOGAN MORTON

Grace Christian

“Logan Morton is a senior linebacker that is prepared each week to help the team,” said GCA Head Coach Justin Price. “He is a reflection of our team standard of being ALL IN.”

LEVI JOHNSON

Bearden

“Levi Johnson is always ready,” said Bearden Head Coach Brad Taylor. “The sophomore wide receiver and defensive back never misses. He always works hard with a positive attitude. He plays important roles on special teams and plays with great effort. He’s also a good student with a 4.3 GPA.”

BRETT JOHNSON

Hardin Valley

Brett Johnson, a senior linebacker/offensive lineman and special teams captain, “is one of the most dependable athletes I’ve had the opportunity to coach in my career,” said Head Coach Tyler Wynn.

“He has a team first attitude and is always willing to do whatever is needed. He exemplifies what this program stands for. He’s resilient, invested, selfless, and gives tremendous effort. He’s our first offensive lineman reserve and our first linebacker off the bench. He’s the type of guy who has the respect of everyone in the locker room. He will excel in whatever he chooses to do in the future.”

COSMIN SUSARA

The King’s Academy

“Cosmin Susara, a junior WR/DB, is not only a hard worker in practice, but he is frequently out on the field after practice, on weekends and even on the tennis courts at night so he can improve his skills under the lights,” said TKA Head Coach Stephen Alexander.

“He always brings positive energy to the team, regardless of what his role in the game plan is. He is the type of kid to ask the coaches to get work at positions that might be outside of his primary focus because he knows it will help the team. And when it is time to step up, he makes plays for the team.”

HENRY JENKINS

Webb School

“I would love to recognize Henry Jenkins, who is our manager,” said Webb coach George Quarles.

“He is a senior who works as hard as anyone on our team. He works out with the players all summer.  If everyone on our team worked as hard as Henry, we would win a lot more games.”
