The Base

“Sometimes the best explanation of the otherwise inexplicable is evil.”

Harold Ford Jr. still claims membership in the Democratic Party, even though that train has long since left the station. That entity no longer exists – at least as it once did. The JFK Democrats of my youth have long since morphed into the Democratic Socialist Party. Even progressives in the Democratic National Committee (DNC) leadership are being replaced by the radicals. The so-called “moderates” and traditional yellow dog Democrats now exist mainly as historical footnotes. And the Trump-hating old guard that is left is actually controlled by the radical base with TDS or worse.

If you doubt me, consider the following statements of those who still march under the Democratic ensign. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries says, “Trump is running the most corrupt administration in American History.” Seriously? Hakeem is not that dumb, but has become a shill for the radical base, just like Walz and Frey are Somali shills in Minnesota. And then there’s the pandering Chris Murphy masquerading as a senator and ridiculously opining, “the lawless Trump administration is intentionally traumatizing children.” The dimwit mayor of Boston says, “Every single human on earth has the legal right” to come to the US. The mayor of Chicago says he will prosecute ICE for criminal misconduct. I’ll end the seemingly endless parade of Dem-witted duplicity with the “certifiable” California Congressman Ro Khanna, who trots out the predictable Democratic canard that Trump will try to interfere with the 2026 midterms. Hey Ro, at least find something original. You Dems are famous for accusing the opposition of what you are already doing.

The real power of the Dems is their radical base, just as the animation of a puppet is the puppeteer. And you see this unhinged base everywhere: protesting, screaming, threatening, assaulting and rioting. These are the puppeteers who pull the strings of Hakeem and all the Dems.

Chuck Schumer threatened the Supreme Court during the Roe vs. Wade hearing, saying SCOTUS would “loose the whirlwind” if they overturned Roe. The Dems actually released the whirlwind, and now their radical base rules them and threatens us all.

In the 1980s, many of us read “The Road Less Traveled,” M. Scott Peck’s celebrated and uplifting book about love and spirituality. Dr. Peck later wrote a second, more troubling book about observations of his psychiatric medical practice. I cannot recommend “The People of the Lie” because it is a disturbing vision of evil in the form of pathological narcissism known as narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Unfortunately, the disorder seems to be all around us.

Narcissism derives from a character in Greek mythology (Narcissus), who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. NPD is a personality disorder where there is an “excessive focus on oneself and lack of empathy with others.” Only an experienced psychiatrist should entertain the diagnosis of NPD, but a “grandiose sense of self-importance, interpersonal difficulties, and a domineering and arrogant persona should raise red flags and give any sane person the willies. When I see unhinged Karens and radicals foaming at the mouth on social media or ranting at protests, I have flashbacks of “The Exorcist.” Psychiatrist Peck raised the specter that evil exists and may overlap with psychiatric illness.

In antiquity, illness was thought to be the result of sin or perhaps the sin of one’s parents. The book of Job is perhaps the oldest book in the Bible and presents these perspectives. Later, Biblical wisdom held that each person is held accountable for their own actions (Deuteronomy 24:16). And even later, illness was considered the result of demon possession as described in Mark 9:17-24. We moderns do not believe illness is caused by sinfulness or demons, but there are things I cannot explain, and Dr. Peck’s observations are as thought-provoking as they are disturbing.

Fifteen years ago, I entered a News-Sentinel writing contest and won the right to publish a series of opinion pieces as a community columnist. I can only remember one such column published on April 10, 2010. I remembered that column because the editor changed the title of my essay from “The Barely Civil War” to a politically correct and unmemorable pablum. I no longer write for the daily paper.

My point then and now is that we are at war with ourselves like never before since the actual Civil War. And the division goes far beyond Republican or Democratic policy differences or turf battles between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. For deeper analysis, I recommend you find and read Victor Davis Hanson’s piece “Minnesota Ignores History’s Warnings,” published February 3, 2026, in The New York Post.

Even the conflicts over immigration, abortion, LGBTQ issues and trans surgery pale by comparison to the real ideological battle between Americanism and those who hate everything American. Leftists and Marxists want to destroy the country because they argue it is inherently corrupt, having been founded on slavery.

We fought a terrible Civil War to save the Union and end the scourge of slavery. Yet those who see everything as class warfare and need an enslaved, dependent underclass continue the war. Their ultimate goal is to destroy the country and refashion it as a socialist/communist utopia. Their radical “brown shirts” now march in the streets and on campuses against Jews, Israel, Wall Street, Kings and ICE or for Palestinians, climate change, abortion and trans rights, George Floyd, BLM, etc. I wonder if the protest crowd needs a program to tell them what they are protesting that day. Apparently, the paid protesters are aware and recruited by Craigslist ads which offer $6500-$12,500 a week for leading the mayhem-of-the-day/week.

It is said that “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Although there is considerable debate about the origin of this quote, I nonetheless believe it is true. Patriots must stand up to this great evil in our country. We must always vote, speak the truth, boycott when necessary (I have my list) and pray for strength and courage to persevere and to weather the storm.
