Trees Knoxville will continue its efforts to make public transit more comfortable and sustainable with a tree-planting event on Thursday, April 2, at 11:00 a.m., at the Concord Northbound bus stop at Tyson Park.
This planting is part of the ongoing “Shade While You Wait” program, launched in partnership with TVA, the City of Knoxville’s Division of Urban Forestry, and Knoxville Area Transit. Building on the success of last year’s project, the initiative continues to expand shade access for transit riders throughout the city by planting at 16 additional bus stops this year.
The “Shade While You Wait” program focuses on planting one to two trees at bus stops to provide relief from heat, improve air quality, reduce the urban heat island effect, and enhance the overall rider experience. The Concord Northbound stop at Tyson Park was selected as a priority location to help create a cooler, more welcoming environment for daily transit users.
“Access to shade is more than a comfort; it’s a public health and quality of life issue,” said Melissa Hinten, Executive Director of Trees Knoxville. “By continuing this work, we’re making Knoxville’s transit system more comfortable for everyone to use.”
Volunteers and community partners will assist with planting and site preparation during the event. Trees Knoxville encourages community members to attend, learn more about urban forestry efforts, and infrastructure improvements across Knoxville.
This project is made possible through funding and support from TVA and strong collaboration with local partners committed to improving Knoxville’s urban canopy.
