Fountain City Elementary Kindergarten teacher Miranda Timmerman has made it the national quarter finals of the Reader’s Digest’s America’s Favorite Teacher Contest.
Timmerman told The Focus:
To the best of my knowledge, I am the only teacher in Knox County Schools that has made it to this level of the competition and possibly in all of Tennessee!
If I win, Bill Nye the Science Guy will come to my school, and I plan to donate $2,000 of my winnings to FCE for what our teachers need! I myself would win $25,000 (minus the $2,000) and a trip to Hawaii. But honestly, my biggest goal is to bring positive national recognition to all of Knox County–our special community and wonderful teachers and families! As the winner, I would be featured in an article in Reader’s Digest!
The entire competition is based on an accumulation of public votes using the following website. People can vote for free every 24 hours. (It does ask them to login to Facebook but only to maintain control of the 24-hour rule.)
If they select a multiple vote option (not required), the money that they donate goes to Bill Nye’s nonprofit Planetary Society. I don’t like to stress this matter because just voting for free is such a huge help! However, I do like for people to know what their money is going to–if they choose this option.

I am currently in 7th place in my quarterfinals group and must be in 1st by 10 pm this Thursday, May 7, to advance to the next round that includes only the top 60 competitors in the nation!
One very important thing that so many people miss is that it’s important to vote every 24 hours, so that many votes are accumulated!
