Halls’ Colby Comparato and Bella Wires sparkled on the diamond this past season.

So good that they were selected for Halls High School’s male and female Student-Athletes of the Year.

Colby, a senior, had a .429 batting average, a .512 on-base percentage, an .842 slugging percentage plus 13 home runs, 12 doubles, two triples, 39 RBI, 43 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.

The Carson-Newman signee also stood out academically with a 3.8 GPA.

Halls Athletic Director Scott Cummings said Comparato “deserved the recognition.”

Wires, a sophomore infielder and the Lady Red Devils’ leadoff batter, also stood out statistically, with a .305 batting average, two doubles, two triples, two home runs, 11 RBI, 19 runs scored, eight stolen bases and a .907 fielding percentage.

“I have always said Bella is the most athletic kid in the school, not just female,” said Halls softball coach Bryan Gordon. “As evidenced by her winning this award I am not the only one that believes that. As for softball she was a catalyst for us this year, hitting leadoff for most of the year and playing third base. She puts a lot of pressure on the other team with her speed.

“Bella is a true gamer,” added Gordon. “When the lights and scoreboard come on she is as competitive as any kid I have coached.”

In basketball, Wires was a point guard and super quick. She could hit the 3-point shots or race by the defenders for a layup. She was fun to watch.
