Introduction to Glaze Chemistry w/ Maggie Connolly
Mondays starting February 22 concluding March 29 | 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM | 6 Sessions

 

Go beyond store-bought glazes! In this class we will learn the foundational concepts necessary to making and developing glazes from how to read glaze recipes to the interplay of glaze, clay, temperature and time. This class will focus on material understanding and material testing with students troubleshooting how to prevent common glaze problems like cracking or crazing.
Maggie Connolly is an artist/potter originally from Dubuque, Iowa, but is now based in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was the 2019-2020 Artist in Residence at Arrowmont for functional ceramics. She is the first American to earn a MFA in Ceramic Design from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China; and the second American to earn a Ph. D in studio ceramics from Tokyo University of the Fine Arts in Tokyo, Japan. She has published extensively about her travels for Ceramics Monthly. Her observations of Asian Ceramic Culture provide the foundation of her ceramic practice and she is interested to how to create a more intentional and purposeful American ceramic culture. Learn to Knit w/ Jane Peoples – Remote Class
Saturday February 27 | 1 PM – 3 PM

Students will learn remotely in this workshop how to cast on and knit – the two foundational skills needed for knitting! With these 2 skills, students can knit anything – scarves – hats – socks – sweaters.  Throughout the workshop, students will have the ability to practice on their own.
The workshop will end with Jane demonstrating the 3rd knitting skill; binding off, brainstorming possible first projects, and Q & A. Jane will contact students with instructions for the workshop. Space is limited to 4 students so sign up early! Workshop leader, Jane Peoples has been knitting for over 20 years. FEATURED TENNESSEE ARTSIST WORKSHOP – Beginning Jewelry Making with Ruth Prince
Saturday, March 6, 10 AM – 4 PM & Sunday, March 7, 12 PM – 4 PM

Learn how to make beautiful pieces of jewelry from sheet metal and wire using a few easily learned skills. Students will learn to use simple tools like saws, files, pliers, and hammers to make a pendant and a pair of earrings that they can wear home. Prior experience is not required! All the tools and materials will be furnished through the small material fee paid directly to the instructor. This two-day workshop will provide techniques for students to continue their jewelry crafting adventure! This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee. Make a Bangle Bracelet with Valerie Russell

In this beginner’s class students will learn how to make a bangle bracelet using super duos, 4 millimeter bicones, and seed beads. No Experience Required. Handbuilding & Activating Surface Texture w/ Maggie Connolly
Tuesdays starting March 16 concluding April 20 | 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM | 6 Sessions

Join Potter Maggie Connolly for an in depth look at alternative form-making methods to the wheel. In addition to coiling and slab-making, we will cover additive and subtractive decorative techniques such as sgraffito, inlay, majolica, underglaze transfers, intaglio, carving, wax resist and much more as ways to create surface ornamentation. Learn How to Make a Hat w/ Jane Peoples – Remote Class
Saturday March 20  | 1 PM – 4 PM

Can you cast on and knit? Ready to learn new knitting skills?  LEARN to KNIT a HAT! Students will learn remotely: how to use circular needles, read a pattern, knit in the round, complete a simple decrease, and bind off. Throughout the workshop, students will have the ability to practice on their own. Time for Q&A will be available throughout the workshop. Jane will contact students with instructions for the workshop. Space is limited to 3 students so sign up early! Fused Glass Workshop with Carolyn Fogelman
Wednesdays, March 24 – April 7 | 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM

In this 4-part workshop students will learn about glass, how to stack glass, how to make advanced shapes and elements along with learning about the process of firing the glass in the kiln. At the completion of the workshop, students will have 6 – 15 pieces ready to wear or give as gifts! Students need to bring safety glasses with side shields or goggles to wear while cutting glass.
