Where estate planning is concerned, failure to plan is planning to fail. Yet it’s easy to procrastinate tackling what may seem like an overwhelming task. Ultimately, however, having a will can insure that your wishes will be carried out.
For people who die intestate (without a will), the state steps in and makes the decisions according to current law, but that may not be what your wishes are.
Matthew (Matt) Haralson, elder law attorney with Kizer & Black, Attorneys, PLLC, will present, “Estate Planning: Wills, Trusts & Probate,” at the Blount County Public Library on Wednesday, September 28, at 11 a.m.
The program, the first in this year’s Focus on Seniors series, co-sponsored by the Blount County Public Library and the Office on Aging, will include brief explanations of the following:
- Simple, complex and living wills
- Revocable, irrevocable and special needs trusts
- Probate/estate administration
If you already have a last will and testament and other estate planning documents that were prepared in another state, you can learn what concerns are unique to Tennessee law in an estate plan.
Matthew C. Haralson graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2002 after working for eight years in emergency services as a firefighter/EMT in Knoxville.
As an attorney at the Maryville law firm, Kizer & Black Attorneys, PLLC, Haralson practices in the areas of Wills & Trusts, Estate Planning, Probate & Estate Administration and Elder Law. He is a member of the Blount County Bar Association (Program Director, 2004), Tennessee and American Bar Associations, the Knoxville Estate Planning Council, and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. A member of the Leadership Blount Class of 2005, Mr. Haralson serves as legal counsel to the Blount County Chamber of Commerce. He also continues to enjoy working as a reserve firefighter/EMT.
Pro Bono Activities include serving as Chair and Vice Chair of the Foundation for the Blount County Public Library; Board of Directors (and Chair) of the Blount County Chapter of American Red Cross; and Board of Directors for the Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad. He also routinely advises nonprofit organizations about legal issues.
