Pat Summitt Foundation to Day of Giving in Honor of Late Coach’s Birthday

The Foundation hopes to raise $50,000 June 13 and 14

The Pat Summitt Foundation (PSF) will hold its fourth annual Pat Summitt’s Day of Giving presented by Tennessee Orofacial Myology in honor of Coach Summitt’s birthday on June 14. The Foundation will also celebrate the opening of the Pat Summitt exhibit at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and PSF President Danielle Donehew’s induction into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Foundation has a goal to raise $50,000 to help further its mission to advance research, provide support for patients and caregivers, and promote education and awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our namesake’s birthday than by raising money to continue her mission and celebrate her continued impact in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. We would like to thank Tennessee Orofacial Myology for their continued presenting sponsorship, and our new sponsors ORNL Federal Credit Union and Garza Law Firm,” says Morgan Vance, executive director for the Pat Summitt Foundation. “New partners coming forward means more teammates helping carry us to victory. We are grateful for their commitment to our mission.”

Earlier this year, the Pat Summitt Foundation announced a major milestone, commencing operations as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit after years of stewardship at a community foundation and announcing several leadership changes. This was a goal of Coach Summitt’s and furthers the Foundation’s commitment to carrying on her legacy. To date, PSF has awarded $5.8 million to the work of related nonprofits delivering services, support and care. In partnership with the University of Tennessee Extension it has also funded and helped launch Pat’s Gameplan for caregivers, and is actively growing other national strategic partnerships and promotions.

Coach Pat Summitt was the head coach of the Lady Vol basketball team for 38 years, leading the program to eight NCAA championships, 32 SEC Championships, and was the first coach in the NCAA to reach 1,000 career wins. She retired in the spring of 2012 after revealing her diagnosis of early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type in the fall of 2011. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $6 million to advance research, provide care and support for patients and caregivers, and raise awareness about the disease.
