It’s National Chemistry Week, and at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, that means it’s time for Al Hazari’s annual Magic of Chemistry show.

Al Hazari, a chemistry lecturer, has used chemistry to perform “magic tricks” in his show for 23 years. This year’s show—free and open to kids and adults—will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Dabney-Buehler Hall, Room 555.

This year’s show is titled “Energy—Now and Forever.”

“Energy is needed for our day-to-day activities, from exercising, powering the lights, or to charging your video game or cell phone,” Hazari said. “Energy is harnessed through a number of sources such as oil and natural gas, nuclear, wind and water. Some of these sources are renewable while others are not. Our show will focus on what energy is, how it is produced and identifying renewable sources of energy.”

Hazari does a number of community outreach events, teaching people in theKnoxvillearea about the value of chemistry. He won the Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach from the American Chemistry Society in 2000 and wrote a book, “Misconceptions in Chemistry,” which talks about the myths surrounding chemistry.
