In order to provide appropriate security measures and a consistent policy for events at Thompson-Boling Arena, the University of Tennessee will institute the same Clear Bag Policy currently in place for all athletic events for all concerts and special events, including Knox County Schools commencement ceremonies.

This policy will limit commencement attendees to one clear plastic bag no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, a single one-gallon, clear, resalable plastic storage bag or a small clutch purse or wallet not to bigger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches. No other bags will be allowed inside Thompson-Boling Arena during commencement ceremonies, so diapers and non-medically necessary items for babies and young children must also be carried in a clear bag.

Medically necessary items that must be carried in a specific bag must be checked and approved at Gates C or D.

Mobile phones, binoculars, video cameras and cameras (without cases), strollers and radios with headsets are permitted. However, all items, including medically necessary items and those meeting the aforementioned stipulations, are subject to search at entry and no items can be left or stored at the gates. No exceptions will be made.

The following items are expressly prohibited:

  • Diaper bags
  • Backpacks (of any size)
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Cans, bottles, coolers
  • Selfie sticks
  • Unmanned aircraft
  • Weapons, including pocket knives
  • Artificial noisemakers, including air horns
  • Smoking, including e-cigarettes

For questions regarding the permissibility of specific items, please contact the Arena Management Office at (865) 974-0953.
