George Quarles was announced as Webb School’s new football head coach last week.
Quarles had tremendous success as the head coach at Maryville High School from 1999 to 2016, where he accumulated a 250-16 (.939) record and guided teams to 11 state championships.
In December 2016, Quarles stepped down from coaching at Maryville to take an associate head coaching post at his college alma mater, Furman University.
Quarles’ achievements have earned him induction into the Tennessee Football Coaches and TSSAA Halls of Fame, as well as the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.
“In George Quarles, we have found an exemplary person and remarkable coach to lead Webb’s football program into the future,” said Dan Gill, Webb Athletic Director. “Known not only as one of the most successful high school coaches in the state of Tennessee, but also as a leader and mentor who cares deeply about the young men under his leadership,
“George brings with him a firm understanding of our mission – both the important traditions of our Spartan football program and the excellence of Webb as an institution.”
In accepting his new position at Webb School, Quarles said he was thrilled to join the Spartan community. “I am extremely excited for this amazing opportunity at Webb School,” he said. “And I cannot wait to meet with the players and get to work.”
Tennessee Titans’ Mr. Football award winners
Tennessee’s best high school football players for 2025 were recognized at the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Awards luncheon hosted by the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 6.
“They were here not only due to their athletic ability that they displayed on the field throughout the season, but just as much for their outstanding character and academic achievements,” said TSSAA Executive Director Mark Reeves.
High school head coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists. A committee of statewide sports writers selected winners based on performance in the 2025 regular season. Academics and character were also taken into consideration.
The Titans became sponsors of the Mr. Football Awards in 2007.
