It was a rare opportunity.  A few years after the 38th president of the United States left office, his presidential limousine was put on display at what was then the TVA&I Fair in Knoxville.  At the time, it was a state-of-the-art vehicle.  With the American flag on each side, it was obvious that the vehicle was designed to transport our nation’s highest government official during his time in office.

Gerald Ford’s presidency ran from 1974 to 1977.  He served as vice president to the late President Richard Nixon before becoming president.  Ford’s presidency was followed by President Jimmy Carter.  Gerald Ford died in 2006.  Carter is one of the few former presidents still living.

A glance at the photo is a stark reminder of just how much the presidential vehicles have changed over the years as well as how much our nation has changed.  Indeed, it is a reminder of how much our world has changed.  As our country prepares to celebrate her independence during a pandemic recovery, have a safe and Happy 4th of July!  Happy Birthday, America!
