Three Ridges to host Zane and Dirk Daniel Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament

By Ken Lay

Three Ridges Golf Course will host the Zane and Dirk Daniel Memorial Golf Scholarship Tournament on Thursday, June 12.

The event runs from 11:30 a.m.- 6 p.m. and registration is $500 per foursome, and proceeds will benefit scholarships for aspiring golfers through the Tennessee Golf Foundation and the Zane and Dirk Daniel Memorial Golf Scholarship.

The event is the brainchild of Creed Daniel and Carl Papa and was conceived as a tribute to Zane and Dirk Daniel, who, during their lifetimes, were prominent attorneys who dedicated their lives to serving the people of East Tennessee.

Zane and Dirk were also avid golfers and advocates for young golfers as they sought to grow the game that meant so much to them.

Creed Daniel is Zane’s brother and Dirk’s father.

“Carl and I had talked about this a few years ago, but then it kind of went on the back burner,” said Creed Daniel, who was once captain of the Carson-Newman University basketball team.

Papa said that he hopes to make the tournament an annual event, and he said he chose to have the tournament at Three Ridges.

“We’re going to make this an annual event, and we chose Three Ridges because Mark Brown is a great friend and he’s put together some great tournaments,” Papa said.

Papa noted that he reserved the June date back in January because the course hosts so many of the area’s top tournaments.

Golfers can compete for various prizes, including closest to the pin.

“We’ll have prizes and we’ll have closest to the hole and we’ll have other prizes,” he said. “We’re working on that.”

The event will be more than just a golf tournament.

Registration fee includes a round of golf, a barbecue meal and live music.

“The Daniels were all musicians,” Papa said. “They’re all multi-instrumentalists. We’re going to have live music, and the musicians were all friends of Zane and Dirk. We’ll have barbecue and beer.”

One of the musicians slated to perform is local country music star Con Hunley.
