The annual Emerald Youth Prayer and Fundraising Breakfast took place on May 1 at the Knoxville Expo Center. The room was filled with the smell of City Catering’s breakfast, mixed with the excitement of more than 1,000 guests. The morning featured inspiring appearances from Coach Rick Barnes, Reverend Harold Middlebrook, local legislators, and dedicated members of Eternal Life Ministries. WVLT Anchor Ted Hall welcomed everyone at the start and end of the event. Matt Deen and Ethan Martinez began the morning with a heartfelt call to worship. The Emerald Youth Choir, led by Darius Hughes, filled the room with uplifting songs, including a moving version of “God, I’m just Grateful.”
Student Fanny Umwari, with support from Abi Crispin, shared how Abi’s encouragement brought her to Emerald Youth and changed her life. Guided by Psalm 16:8, “I will keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken,” Fanny talked about her new confidence, her baptism, her calling to social work, and her strong trust in God’s plan. A video highlighted Emerald Youth’s impressive growth over the years.
Steve Diggs, President and CEO, shared his vision for the city, quoting from Joshua and hoping that future generations will “know the fullness of God.” The community took a moment to remember the late WATE Meteorologist Matt Hinkin, a valued friend and supporter for thirty years.
Diggs publicly announced a big milestone: Emerald Youth has bought a new multi-purpose property to expand services for children and families, supported by a $9 million commitment from the state of Tennessee.
Pastor Ashley Kariuki and Bishop Evans Kariuki of Eternal Life Ministries spoke with deep love for Knoxville, sharing how a seed of faith planted by God grew into a vision focused on service and spiritual growth. As breakfast ended, a spirit of generosity filled the room and guests had the opportunity to give back.
Emerald Youth is a Christian nonprofit that has served families in Knoxville for 35 years. Inspired by the Bible passage John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
