Mike had never heard of platelet donations when his daughter Abbey was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in 2021. A rare and serious condition where a person’s bone marrow fails to produce enough blood cells. Abbey needed ongoing platelet infusions to keep her alive during her treatment.
Like any parent, Mike wanted to help, so he donated platelets—and then donated again and again. He invited family and friends to donate with him and shared his story with strangers. Through it all, Abbey received 16 blood and 48 platelet transfusions.
Before Mike began his journey with MEDIC, he previously worked for UPS for 35.5 years. Because of the importance of platelet donations and recruitment, MEDIC created a part-time position. Mike applied and was hired as MEDIC’s Platelet Recruiter. Mike’s work with MEDIC encompasses community outreach, building relationships with potential donors, and recruiting existing blood donors to donate platelets. Mike brings a personal element to the role and helps donors understand the importance of the blood product and the impact that they have every day.
