State Representative Dave Wright made an appearance at the Halls Republican Club Tuesday night at the Halls Boys and Girls Club.
He recapped the recently completed legislative session and took a few questions from the audience. He also discussed the new laws that will go into effect on July 1.
In the last legislative session, the Tennessee House passed bills regarding immigration, underage vaping and tobacco use and body cameras for prison personnel. He also discussed the special session for redistricting in West Tennessee.
“We passed eight to 10 bills on immigration (reform), and we passed bills on underage vaping, and we also approved more money for the DCS, and we passed legislation on body cameras for people working in prisons,” Wright said. “We also passed legislation on modular housing in an effort to make housing more affordable.”
Wright noted that the immigration bills were voted on separately.
“All those bills passed, and we had so many because we wanted them all to pass,” he said. “We didn’t want one thing to kill an immigration bill.”
“It’s an honor for me to serve the people of Tennessee,” Wright said. “I have a lot left to do, and we need to work hard.”
Wright opened his remarks by discussing his path to public service and his time in the military.
Wright was the featured speaker. State Representative Michele Carringer was also scheduled to speak Tuesday night, but missed the meeting due to a family emergency.
The upcoming election also came to the forefront of the meeting as Chelsea Rose, wife of Tennessee gubernatorial candidate John Rose, also spoke briefly about her husband’s campaign.
The club contributed $500 to Justin Cofer’s county commission campaign. Cofer, who is seeking the at-large Seat 10, was not present at the meeting due to a family commitment.
Knox County General Sessions Court Judge Andrea Kline was also present at the meeting, and she gave some brief remarks regarding her campaign.
