PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on January 17, 2026, a male infant was surrendered by two people claiming to be the infant’s mother and father who did not express an intent to return for the infant and that the infant was surrendered to an individual pursuant to N.C.G.S. 7B-521, specifically a health care provider authorized to accept the surrendered infant and UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on January 17, 2026.
The infant had the following physical characteristics at the time of surrender: Caucasian male born at 6 pounds 10.2 ounces, 19 ¾ inches long. The infant has light brown hair and no visible marks or other defining characteristics.
The infant is now in the physical and legal custody of the Orange County Department of Social Services (“OCDSS”), the County in North Carolina where the infant was surrendered.
Petitions to Terminate the Parental Rights of the surrendering mother and father have been filed with the purpose of legally clearing Baby Doe for adoption in accordance with safe surrender statutes, N.C.G.S. § 7B-520 et seq. If a parent is indigent, the parent is entitled to appointed counsel and may contact the Clerk of Court of Orange County immediately to request counsel.
The pretrial hearing pursuant to G.S. 7B-1108.1 is scheduled for July 16, 2026, and the parent(s) are notified that he or she may attend the pretrial hearing.
You have 30 days from June 15, 2026, the first date of publication of this Notice, to respond to said Petitions by filing a written answer to the petition with the Orange County Clerk of Court.
