Widows’ Ministry Lifting Spirits at Wallace Memorial

By Ralphine Major

They arrived at the church dressed in festive pinks and reds. The pastoral staff escorted them to their seats. The occasion was a Valentine’s Day Banquet in the atrium at Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. But this was a different kind of celebration thanks to the Spirit Lifters, a Love Community Ministry to widows of Wallace Memorial and the surrounding area.

There are over 50 widows in the Spirit Lifters group which meets monthly in support of each other. While they share in each other’s losses, the gatherings provide a constant reminder that God still has a purpose and a plan for their lives. On February 14, the Spirit Lifters came together and enjoyed a delicious lunch and listened to stories by humorist Alan Cottrell. “It certainly was a blessing seeing the room filled with smiles knowing this was overall a challenging day for many,” Carolyn Jensen said. Carolyn is the director and founder of the ministry. The special day called for a special gift. Each widow was given a red felt envelope decorated, of course, with hearts. Inside was a love letter from God reminding the widows of His great love for them. The shared love, the lunch, the laughter, and the love letter from God—what a memorable Valentine’s Day! Words of Faith: The Spirit Lifters claim the verse from Psalm 62:2 (NIV): “Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress; I will never be shaken.”
