The Enemy Among Us

By Dr. Jim Ferguson

Everyone predicted it would get worse. And it has. Because the left is losing the culture war, it has now added terrorism by political assassination to its repertoire.

It has been a bad week for America. An Auburn professor was robbed and murdered. Then we learned that a young woman was butchered by an insane career criminal in Charlotte, North Carolina, which was initially covered up by the media. And now Charlie Kirk, a young father who dared to debate the left, has been assassinated in Utah, completing evil’s unholy trinity of violence.

We are relatively safe in Knoxville, Tennessee, but terrorism and crime can strike anywhere, so I never leave my property unarmed. The government cannot protect my family and in some places is unwilling to try. I disagree with Democrats who want us to live in high density surroundings, ride public transportation and suffer lawlessness. Since disagreeing with leftists is dangerous, I rarely go unarmed.

I have added Charlotte, North Carolina to my list of big cities which I will avoid because of the horrible murder of the young Ukrainian refugee. Cashless bail, defunding the police and the failure of progressive district attorneys to prosecute disturbed criminals have made big cities especially unsafe.

Admittedly, my heart has become hardened to those who perpetrate evil, but also to those who promote and allow evil, even those who support evil by voting for it. There must be accountability.

You need to be cautious, but you have to live. You must not surrender to the enemy among us. So Becky and I will soon fly into Portland, Oregon to visit my daughter and her family, and celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. However, we are renting a car and immediately leaving the city.

The movie Forrest Gump has produced numerous memes of Forrest looking perplexed saying, “And just like that…” then you complete the sentence. The Democrat mayor of Charlotte finally completed sentences on the butchery of the young Ukrainian woman. However, the vapid excuses for mental illness and the need for more social programs were just more liberal claptrap. I agree that mental illness is a major factor in homelessness, drugs and crime. Unfortunately, we have a dearth of mental institutions to care for and treat disturbed people and protect the rest of us.

Beginning in the 1950s and accelerating in the 1960s, mental institutions were closed. It was hoped that their largely domiciliary focus could be replaced with outpatient treatment utilizing psychotropic drugs and mental health agencies. Furthermore, patient rights issues were championed by advocates and the ACLU, perhaps stirred by the 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, subsequently made into the eponymous movie with Jack Nicholson.

Like so many liberal ventures, this experiment has been a dismal failure. I feel sorry for the poor people, once called lunatics, who don’t take their medicine and now roam the streets with their demons, to be preyed upon and to threaten and attack others.

And then you have the criminal element, most of whom are not insane, but arguably these are damaged people who also pose grave risks to society.

President Trump sent troops into Washington, D.C., to support the police and protect Washington and its citizens. This produced reductions in crime, drugs, encampments and vagrancy. Even the uber liberal Democrat mayor of Washington acknowledged the decrease in criminal offenses. Similarly, liberal Democrats were forced to acknowledge that President Trump fixed the border crisis in short order. The long term Washington problem is the disastrous home rule of the district whose council has defunded and driven away police and defended criminals instead of protecting its citizens. The District is even threatening to sue the President for providing safety and reducing crime.

I remain amazed that Democrats continue to find dangerous, destructive and “insane” policies that Americans with a modicum of common sense oppose. There are illegal aliens whose first action in our country was to violate immigration law.  Fully 2/3 of the illegals arrested by ICE have criminal records. And opposing ICE officers rounding up drug cartel criminals and their gangs endangers us all, but especially those in big cities – unless you are rich and can afford gated communities and private security. Defunding the police enables lawlessness, crime and danger as does “no cash bail.” And equally indefensible is opposing voter ID. You must show identification to buy cigarettes, beer, etc. No voter ID only promotes election fraud, but that’s apparently what Democrats want.

There are so many stupid Democrat ideas that I find it difficult to pick the one most ridiculous. So I’ll just pick a recent one. Virginia Senator Tim Kane compared Thomas Jefferson’s assertion that our unalienable rights coming from God as similar to the fanaticism of an Iranian mullah. Like so many other leaders of the Democratic Party, Kane is an abject fool and apparently believes our fundamental rights come from government rather than God. Kane should study history and Virginians should throw him out of office.

But there is more than just the perverse Democrat party leadership. There is a cadre of acolytes and vacuous voters who support the insane anti-American policies of Democrats. Since I’m now retired, I’m home at 5 o’clock and frequently watch The Five. A recent exchange between Greg Gutfeld and Harold Ford Junior showcases this problem.

Greg Gutfeld challenged the seemingly reasonable Democrat Ford to do something to help his floundering party. Ford declined to use his political capital to do so. And there you have it. It takes courage.   President Trump has it and Harold Ford does not. You can fight for your principles or run away. But you can also just go along to get along.

Malcolm Gladwell is most famous for his celebrated book The Tipping Point. He tells a story of being at a large conference where he disagreed with the group-think championing transgenderism, but was afraid to speak up. He now admits that he was a coward. But I give him credit for having the courage to admit his previous submission.

Old Dems are scared of the radical monsters they cultivated and who now run the Democrat party. But now with the political murder of Charlie Kirk, Schumer has even more to be concerned about. He once threatened the Supreme Court with the infamous line “You have loosed the whirlwind.” Now he’s just trying to hang on. But the progressive Democrat socialists and leftists have stirred the sleeping giant which will destroy the radicals and the remnants of the Democrat party.

There is no compromise with leftist evil which has become America’s Hamas. This must be the Turning Point or we are lost.
