There is something powerful about people who keep showing up. They may never make headlines. They may never stand beneath bright lights or receive an award for what they do, but day after day, year after year, they keep showing up and walking faithfully with God and people. We live in a world fascinated by the spectacular. We notice the breakthrough, the big moment, the dramatic accomplishments, but some of the greatest things God ever builds are not built in a moment; they are built through a lifetime of ordinary faithfulness.
Sometimes the greatest testimony is a continual trajectory of doing what you have always done! That is what we call consistency. Psalm 92 paints a beautiful picture of this kind of life:
“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.” The Psalmist’s language is powerful: Planted. Growing. Flourishing. Producing fruit. None of these happen overnight.
You can plant a tree in a moment, but you cannot grow one in a moment. Growth, roots, strength and fruit all take time. So does a legacy.
One faithful day may not seem like much, but it’s more powerful than you think. You get up, pray, go to work and love your family; you keep your word, serve somebody and worship God. You make the right decision when nobody is watching. Then tomorrow, you get up and do it all again. Here is the synergy: one faithful day becomes a faithful week. Faithful weeks become faithful months. Faithful months become faithful years. And one faithful year stacked upon another eventually becomes a faithful life. That faithful life becomes your legacy.
The truth is that consistency rarely looks impressive in the immediate moment. Nobody throws a party because you kept your promises today or hands you a trophy because you showed up when you were tired. Nobody writes an article because you prayed for your children again, served your church another Sunday, stayed faithful to your spouse another year, or quietly did the right thing when doing the wrong thing would have been easier. Keep doing it, because heaven measures differently than the world does. We tend to celebrate moments, but God honors faithfulness. I Corinthians 4:2 says that the thing required of us as believers is that we “be found faithful.”
Some of the strongest Christians I have ever known were not necessarily the loudest; they were simply the ones who stayed planted. They survived storms, endured disappointments, buried loved ones, walked through sickness, financial struggles and even experienced unanswered prayers. Yet, they kept showing up, believing, worshiping, serving and loving Jesus and others.
Never underestimate another ordinary faithful day. One day you will look back and realize those ordinary days were building something extraordinary. Your children, grandchildren, church, and community were all watching. Somewhere along the way, what you repeatedly did became who you were, and that became your testimony. Eventually, that testimony will become your legacy. And when our race is finished, may the people who knew us best be able to say something wonderfully simple: They loved God and people. They stayed planted, kept showing up, and they finished faithful. Most often, the greatest legacy is not that you did something spectacular; your greatest testimony is simply that, through every season of life, you never stopped doing what was right.
